Wisconsin Under Attack

under attack
first teachers
and education,
unions destroyed
along with respect for our profession.

It didn’t stop there-
high-speed rail and the jobs
that came with it,
health care for the poorest among us-
did I mention the environment?

We were once leaders in workers’ rights,
caring for the poor,
the environment.

Now we’re the laughing stock
of the nation
as he continues ripping
at our schools and universities,
more unions
and the legacy of Aldo Leopold.

How did this state re-elect
this fraudulent monster?
How can we pass this mess
on to our children?

  1. I feel your pain. It is hard to be from Wisconsin right now and it’s been a struggle to stay positive for a few years now. Hoping for better years sooner, rather than later.

  2. As an Ohioan, I can definitely relate.

Your poem also reminded me of a story on “This American Life” about how Scott Walker rescinded an invitation from a university student to be a community ambassador because his administration discovered that the student signed the petition to recall Walker (the student’s mother was a teacher). It was ridiculous.

(Here is a link to an article about it: http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/scott-walker-withdraws-appointment-of-student-regent-who-signed-recall-b9933118z1-211395241.html)

    1. I know this story, Rachel. He’s done more lying than truth-telling. There’s been other cases like this, and it’s spread to districts and municipalities. During school board elections last year, this was a question that Walker supporters were asking at forums~ did you sign the petition? Anyone who cares about education should have; I just can’t understand the mindset of people voting completely against their own self-interest.

      1. We had Kasich try to do a lot of the same things Walker has been doing (especially around 2010), and it was so frustrating because there wasn’t even an opponent during the elections in November. He won by a landslide, and no one really cares.
